NOWRA AND SEAN'S BIRTHDAY CAKE
Sean's requested birthday cake one year was a handmade Lindy's Cheesecake (made by me and took all day to make) he ate
most of it himself the year he turned 15. There
was one piece left (a large) and Sean was coveting it
for his Saturday "breakfast" while he watched cartoons.
So he got up on Staurday morning, gets his piece of cake on a plate, goes
into the family room and turns on the TV. Then he notices he
forgot to get a drink and walks back into the kitchen
where we all were having our coffee deciding what we would do that day. Sean gets his drink and walks back into
the family room. Shortly my big black dog, the
infamous Nowra (who was part lab part bear I think and the biggest part pig), comes to the kitchen and wants to be
let out the side door in the kitchen, she's standing there in a great rush acting like she has to pee or worse.
Suffedly Sean let's out a screech and comes
storming back into the kitchen saying, "who grabbed
my cheesecake". We all looked around and said, "we don't know, we've been in
here all morning". So Sean races around the downstairs
of the house and we start looking too, but in all the
confusion we forget to let the dog out.
Sean finally
notices Nowra standing with her muzzle pointed at the door so he goes to let her out, but then he also
notices her jowls are expanded like balloons. So, Sean
opens Nowra's mouth (with somewhat of a resistance from Nowra) and there ,low and behold, the entire
piece of cheesecake intact in her mouth. LOL
She
almost got away with it too and Sean got soooo mad a her he
took it out of her mouth and was not going to let her
eat it to punish her for thievery;l so he threw it in the trash. but
Finally I dug the piece of cheesecake out of the trash and fed her, the ill gotten gain.
That dog was such a piece of work.
She was so smart and so wilful and just such a funny
girl. She loved to ride in the cars, one day I lost
her and I looked all around the house and yard but could not find her.
So
I got my keys and started jingling them. Usually just pulling your keys out of your pocket or your purse was enough to arouse the wanderlust of Nowra who loved Bye Bye perhaps more than food. She did not come running. Worried, I went to get in the car to look for
her. There she was behind the wheel taking a nap. I
had left the window half way down and somehow she
climbed through the window and of course scratched up
the side of the car.
Then there was the time my ex decided to remodel the
upstairs bathroom. He tore it all apart and he had
all the windows open upstairs because it was warm. We
were living in the Adirondacks at the time so we did
not need A/C. After a while he came down for lunch
and we were sitting in front of the picture window in
the kitchen and noticing people were going by the
house honking and pointing and laughing. We went
outside and there was Miss Nowra holding court on the
roof. Walking around having a great old time.
You could almost never avoid taking her if you went
anywhere and when you got out of the car to go into
the store or whatever, and left Norwa in the car; she
would howl and cry and bark and bitch like someone was
killing her.
But she was so noble and wonderful. She saved my life
one night when I was attacked and being strangled. She
bit the assailant and hung onto him until he turned
his attention from me to her and he kicked her
unmercifully but it gave me time to dial 911. She was
okay after and I fed her steaks for a week.
I have to think she had a really good dogs life. She
lived to 13.5 years. Most of her life was in New
York, Upstate in the woods. We had several camp homes
and she loved to go up there and she could run wild
and do as she wished. She was a lovely soul and I long
to see her again if it is possible.
